How to Tell If You Have a Hidden Water Leak

Seven warning signs that water is escaping inside your walls — and how to confirm a leak before it causes major damage.

A hidden water leak can run for weeks — sometimes months — before it shows itself as a stained ceiling or buckled floor. The damage and water-bill cost by that point can easily reach five figures. The good news: most hidden leaks give off subtle clues if you know what to look for.

1. Your water bill jumps for no reason. A sudden 20–30% increase with no change in household routine is one of the strongest indicators of a hidden leak on your side of the meter.

2. The meter spins when nothing is on. Shut off every fixture and appliance, then watch the meter dial. If it's still moving, water is going somewhere it shouldn't.

3. Warm spots on the slab floor. A slab leak from a hot water line radiates heat through the concrete.

4. Musty smell with no visible water. Mold thrives on the dampness from a slow leak inside a wall.

5. Sound of running water inside a wall. Quiet hissing or trickling when the house is silent often means a pinhole leak.

6. Cracking paint, bubbling wallpaper, or stained drywall. Even a small discoloration along a baseboard is worth opening up.

7. Lush green patches in the yard. A leaking irrigation line or sewer lateral feeds the grass above it.
